The dynamic relationship between patient and practitioner is a crucial component to the patient’s healing journey. A sacred, trusting relationship that derives from mutual respect and understanding serves as a vital component for patient’s journey to heal. A feeling of trust is essential to human psychology because it provides a feeling of safety. A sense of safety calms the sympathetic pathway of the patient’s nervous system and strengthen the patient’s para-sympathetic system. The para-sympathetic pathway is responsible for increasing immunity, relaxation, enhancing digestion, and increasing blood flow throughout the body. Chronic illness tends to put our nervous system under constant duress, which further implicates our physical and emotional illness. Our nervous system oversees the body. It regulates every aspect of our physical and mental health. When our nervous system is in a state of imbalance, our physical and emotional wellbeing is compromised. For this reason, it is important that the patient’s para-sympathetic nervous system is strengthen so that the patient’s physiology is in the path of health restoration. In this situation, a sense of sacred space is vital to the patient’s psychology.
It is very important for me, as a practitioner, to create a feeling of mutual respect and understanding with all of my patients because I realize that a professional, sacred space between my patients and I is vital to the healing processes of my patients.
